This book sets out the issues that face those suddenly hit with a life changing health issue. It is educational for dealing with the medical professionals. It talks about the emotional trauma and how to deal with it. It gives very practical advice and helps you understand that your feelings are okay.
I would have loved to have this tool to help me through my Mother's massive stroke. There is just so much that the average person doesn't know. This book will definitely help them to figure it out.
This book should be given to everyone whose loved one suffers from this traumatic event.

I thought this book was excellent. I am a nurse also, but we are not always sure what is needed when a loved one becomes ill. We tend to neglect our needs and we become less effective and bitter at times. This book addresses this and I think it would be VERY helpful for anyone whose spouse has had a stroke or even has a debilitating disease that requires care

It happens suddenly. Your spouse or loved one has a stroke and just like that his or her life is changed forever… But so is yours. Now you are thrust into the role of primary caregiver to help make decisions about treatments, ongoing care and managing a “new life”. It’s confusing, overwhelming, and utterly frustrating. To top it off, you are on your own to figure it all out.

 Until now.

Lana Wilhelm, a registered nurse, found herself in that exact position when her husband, Rick, suddenly had a debilitating stroke. While she had familiarity with his medical needs since she is in the healthcare field, she was amazed to learn there were no books or resources for the caregiver to help them through difficult and changing times. So, she wrote Stroke and the Spouse to give caregivers the information they need to know about stroke care, what they should expect to happen and how to manage their new roles.

“Someone in the United States has a stroke every 40 seconds,” says Lana, “and that means every year more than 790,000 people suddenly become stroke caregivers. I wrote this book for those caregivers … to help them navigate their new world.”

The book and website is chock full of tips, worksheets, resources, definitions, and advice … all compiled and provided through the eyes, and heart, of someone who was thrust into the caregiver role. Stroke and the Spouse takes a caregiver from the time of the event through the first few years of support. It truly is a treasure for those who have been forced into this new journey.
